In the fall of 2000 I built these little devices. They use the same RadioShack project box, but once you get to know them they are actually quite different; the last two that are actually twins. Notice the ultrasonic receiver/emitter silverish protrusion at the top. The detector units also have a large round black speaker: ultrasound in through the top, audible sound out through the speaker. The one unit without a speaker is an emitter: it chirps like a bat -- you can't hear it, but the the detectors can!
