Linearly polarized light scattered by a column of disolved sucrose (granulated table sugar). The light enters the tube at the bottom, through a linear polarizer, and the color spiral turns left. Note that when looking down the tube, this means the polarization has turned to the *right*. Sucrose is a compound of glucose (dextrose) and fructose (levulose), it rotates the light's linear polarization to the right. |
